Little Miss Sunshine

Dressed like a typical student, in jeans and Ugg boots, with her hair pulled up in a ponytail, Emily Cummins confesses that she loves listening to ridiculously cheesy music by the likes of Britney Spears and Girls Aloud and enjoys watching the X-Factor with her friends.

But this 21-year-old business management student, moved by the plight of the youngsters and families she witnessed during her gap year in the townships of Namibia, has also got much weightier matters on her mind.

An innovative and award-winning designer, who started helping her grandfather make things in his garden shed from the age of four, she has already created and marketed a number of products which are improving people's lives in the developing world.

Emily was still at school in Skipton when she won a design award for her ingenious water-bucket carrier for use in Africa.

Smells like Adelaide

The mullet hair cut, check shirt and ugg boots, so fashionable in the days of Sherbert and Skyhooks, have never really gone out of fashion here.

These are my people, especially those with the ugg boots.

The 'six degrees of separation' theory is alive and well as strangers play 'who knows who' under a pale blue sky drinking dark Coopers Ale in a beer garden full of frangipani.

The Central Market is a sensual delight. When I was five I'd stand at the Charlesworth Nut Stand every week and a jolly woman would pinch my cheeks and give me a small bag of sugar-coated peanuts. Charlesworths are still there.

Nowhere on earth can one find nectarines and peaches in such chin-dripping quality and abundance as in Adelaide. The black alluvial soils of the Murray Valley are perfect for growing stone fruit

How to get dressed: the boot quiz

Admittedly, the Ugg never went away (if you want to remind yourself what shopping was like in ye olde days, check out the queues, yes, queues, at the Ugg store in Westfield). Enter the Incredibly Insightful Boot Quiz.

Teen witnesses King's 'dream coming true' at Lincoln Memorial

Garbage cans overflowed, leaving Starbucks coffee and hand-warmer packages all over the ground; magazines and flyers blew in between the army of ugg boots.

Despite numb appendages, sleep-deprivation and claustrophobia, spirits were high. There was a genial atmosphere pervading the crowd hours before the inauguration. Everyone expressed their appreciation for others' presence with welcoming hearts and friendly exchanges. The positive energy was infectious, the ugg boots were clearly present

In one intersection, people pounded on bongos and chanted "Obama" until their voices gave out.

Standing on a corner, a woman held a poster over her head, preaching the words written on it, "If you want change: Pray for Obama." Each time she said it, she enunciated every word with the same fervor as the time before. I saw here ugg boots in the grass.

Spring Uggs

Here at the editorial office, we talk about Uggs all the time. And I know many of you (the men, especially) hate the shapeless shoe. Regardless of those thoughts, Uggs are still a most-coveted item in stores and online. Now Ugg has introduced a spring line a booty-style shoes.

They're cute, colorful and I love the buttons. As for the cream pair, though, those would look ratty after one wearing!

The Uggs cost about $140 and are available at Neiman Marcus.

These Uggs aren't made for walkin'

There is now medical and commercial evidence to suggest that Ugg boots are going out of fashion. The Australian footwear that makes you look like you've got child-bearing ankles and which is – inexplicably – a favourite with otherwise stylish celebrities, is officially a health risk.

The fashion trend that refused to die, despite having the death knell for it sounded as long ago as 2006, may finally be seen off by reports by podiatrists and pharmacists that the sheepskin-lined, structureless bootees cause sprained ankles and raging fungal infections. Hasan Ukra of Boots states that the "moist atmosphere" that Uggs cultivate leads to athlete's foot, while podiatrist Linda Hawkins claims that wearing footwear without any heel or sole support causes ankles to twist more easily.

Lily Allen shows no Fear as she goes sledging in the snow

Wearing her controversial Prada Finnish fox fur hat, Lily was wrapped up warm in a chunky black coat, denim hotpants, black tights and..... yes, Ugg boots.

As well as sledging and indulging in snowball fights, the Smile singer also built a snowman.

These Boots Were Made For Walking

It seems that the strong material and lining of these boots are going to take over the Ugg fetish that we all seem to have around this time of the year. These boots are very sporty, but incredibly chic when paired with the right outfit and used for the right occasions. As a plus, they can double as your warm slip-on boots and a pair of rain boots. If you are the sport trendsetter, then this is a fashion statement that you have to try out.

Last, but not least, preppy girls love to look good all the time: even in the snow, rain, or shine. A pair of fur-trimmed boots with a little heel will appeal to the preppy desire. Ralph Lauren has a cute pair of camel colored stilettos that are casual enough for jeans and comfortable enough to grace the brick sidewalks in. Plus, these boots look adorable with sweater dresses and truly sets off the overall look.

Ugg boots bad for your feet?

Uggs, Australia's famous luxurious sheepskin winter boots and similar products may actually cause foot problems. Podiatrists are seeing the negative effects from this sheepskin footwear. For example, check out this recent article in the UK's Now Magazine.

Many podiatrists stress people with different pronation in their feet (whether they are flat footed or have normal or high arches) will wear out shoes differently. Seems like people with pronated feet (flat footed) should shy away from Uggs.

“In flat footed people, Uggs, because they are so soft with little support, will wear out quicker and more severely when compared to people with higher arches," said Jaqueline Sutera, Doctor of Podiatric Medicine.

Sutera also offers advice to those would want to wear Uggs for the look, but who still want to show their feet some TLC, “Limit use to about four hours daily.
